ABOUT PILATES.....TYPE OF PILATES
CHOOSE THE TYPE OF PILATES TO SUIT YOU
There are a number of different types of Pilates sessions, each with a slightly different focus and goal. The range to choose from is sufficient to suit every individual need, no matter what movement background you have.
Choose the class format that is right for you based on your instructor recommendation or your needs and goals. If it doesn't suit you, then try a different one and find the best fit:
Mat Classes
Mat exercises are a great and affordable way to do Pilates but large Mat classes offer the least value of all Pilates services and are not suited to people with injuries. It is best suited to experienced and fit participants with good body awareness and previous Pilates experience.
To get started on mat classes join an introductory course or have a few private sessions to learn the fundamentals and make sure you are in the right level class.
Studio Sessions
Studio sessions usually include exercises on the mat and on spring-driven machines designed by Joseph Pilates to add resistance and challenge. The equipment adds variety and depth to the work as each machine works the body slightly differently. There are usually 4 different formats of studio sessions:
Group classes: When all participants are performing the same exercise at the same level on the same type of equipment or using small props. These classes have between 5-12 participants and prior knowledge of Pilates is required to join these classes. Great when you have learnt the fundamentals and are seeking a flowing workout and the social and competitive elements.
Semi-private sessions: Each participant will be working on a designated piece of equipment and perform exercises that specifically address their individual needs. For the best use of your dollars, learn the exercises and be as independent as possible so your teacher will be able to move around the room and provide corrections and new exercises without breaking the flow of the class.
Duets: Duets are ideal for people working at the same level who want a flowing and challenging supervised workout. It can be a more affordable option for those with injuries who want more supervision and guidance.
Private sessions: This is the most valuable service, regardless of your fitness level. It is the ideal way to start Pilates and recommended for anyone with injuries or special conditions that require close supervision. You will keep moving, receive attention to detail and added challenge.
